NCDOI celebrates 40-year anniversary of senior health program

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will mark the 40-year anniversary of the Department’s nationally recognized Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) at a conference in Greensboro on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

In September 1986, North Carolina became the second state in the nation to establish a health insurance counseling program. Born out of a need to better educate the public on Medicare, SHIIP started modestly with just two NCDOI employees who traveled the state to guide seniors on health insurance issues. The program evolved into an award-winning army of trained volunteers in all 100 counties, as well as expert staff who handle questions online and by phone. They provide free, unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers about the complexities of Medicare and related products to help consumers make the best-informed choices.

In 2025, SHIIP helped 62,000 Medicare beneficiaries save more than $46 million.  Go to www.ncshiip.com or call 855-408-1212 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for more information.

Commissioner Causey will help kick off the SHIIP conference:

9 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, Embassy Suites by Hilton Greensboro Airport, 204 Centreport Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27409

Commissioner Causey and SHIIP staff will be available for interviews. Area media wishing to cover this event may RSVP at press@ncdoi.gov.
